The Children’s Department is proud to announce that they have joined the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” reading initiative.  For 2016 & beyond, West Hempstead residents & their newborn, infant & toddler are welcome to take up the challenge and read their way to Kindergarten success.

Although 1,000 books sounds like a lot, it’s not if you really think about it.  If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year, 730 books in 2 years and 1,095 books in three years.  Plus, you don’t have to do all the reading! Record the books your daycare providers or nursery school teachers have read to your little one. Make it a family event and have siblings read together.  Most children do not begin Kindergarten until about 5 years old, so you have plenty of time to meet your goal.

Participants will receive their “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” reading log & Children’s Room tote bag upon registration.  Children’s Room staff has also provided tips for reading aloud and book suggestions to get started.  At reading milestones participants are asked to bring their reading log to the Children’s Department for a prize that will help build your home library.  Once completed, the reading log makes a wonderful keepsake for years to come.

For more information about “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” visit their website or download their app.  Although this program is for West Hempstead residents only, we encourage non-residents to build their own program with the reading logs provided on the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” website.
